The Magnificent Ten
A year ago it seemed chaotic and hard to distinguish one company versus another in terms of what they were building and why. As we move into the last part of 2016 many companies in the Container arena are focusing on the importance of the Data Center Operating System (DC/OS). By our latest count there are at least ten organizations wanting to be the DC/OS of the future – Amazon, Apcera, Core OS, Docker, Joyent, Mesosphere, Microsoft, Pivotal, Rackspace and VMware. If you are a startup with a lot of cash you might end up building your platform with your own team and some small acquisitions. If you’re a small startup with a handful of developers you’ll probably end up partnering with one or two of the bigger guys and ride on their coattails. Or if you’re a big brand like Microsoft or VMware you are likely to build out through large and small acquisitions. Since the hardware everyone is using is virtually the same thanks to commoditization, then it’s up to the software if you want to have any significant differentiation. And, if that’s the case, then you are likely to focus on the operating system as history has shown how significant that can be for winners. And it isn not just money – the people who own the platform get to influence what others may or may not do. It puts them in the best position to get the greatest return. We’re looking forward to covering new activities with a DC/OS focus.
